All That Jazz

Commissioned by The Verve Café Bar

Byram St, Huddersfield

This piece was created for a well-known café-bar and music venue in Huddersfield. The owner wanted something that would make a real impact on a large wall, and gave me pretty much free rein to do what I wanted. (continued below)

I went to Stockholm and managed to get permission to photograph whatever I liked in a jazz club that is said to be the oldest (or maybe one of the oldest) jazz clubs in Europe while a 1940's-style jazz band were setting up, using period instruments. Over the years people have left behind all kinds of stuff - a double bass, suzaphone, BBC megaphone, a wooden leg, a wooden wheelchair - and they hang it all from the ceiling. I also photographed in music shops (including one run by a guy who used to play with the New York Dolls who also let me photograph his 7-string guitar), and the private guitar collection of the guitarist from a one-time big band in Stockholm.

The final piece is a very detailed, very high-resolution digital photomontage, 3.6 x 1.8 metres, made out of 78 box canvases at 3 different depths. The image goes round the sides of each one, so it looks quite different depending on where you are standing. It is a kind of 'cubist' photomontage made possible by contemporary digital and print technology.

It is available to order to any size you like. We can create in-house a version 6 metres wide by 3 metres high, but it could be much larger than that. The same format can also be used to create a piece based on any subject matter that can be photographed.
